Abstract
Teacher performance is determined by the policies made by the principal, the formulation of the planning program prepared by the principal must be clear and transparent, the duties and responsibilities should be assigned wisely and measurably to the teacher. The study is entitled The Principal’s Policy in Improving Teacher Performance at State Senior High School Number 01 of Banda Aceh. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The techniques of data collection are interviews, observation, and documentation. The subjects of the research were a principal and the teachers. The results of the study showed that, first, the principal formulated a program to improve teacher performance. The principal made the planning program in improving the teacher's performance, such as (1) meeting all the fields and discussing the school semester and the annual planning school, (2) revising the school vision and mission, (3) supervising planning with the teaching curriculum, (4) meeting with the committee schools and guardians for financial participation planning". Second, principal’s strategies in efforts to improve the performance of teachers were done by monitoring directly and forming teamwork or team-teaching teachers and involving MGMP schools that exist at State Senior High School number 1 of Banda Aceh. The principal as a manager monitor directly and provide comments that can build or provide solutions to teachers in solving problems. Third, the obstacles faced by the principal in improving teacher performance, in general, were the lack of infrastructure. The impact of earthquake and Tsunami resulted in the adverse effects on the condition of the building, the teachers were worried about the collapse of buildings that have been cracked, students are not comfortable, so are the teachers. Another obstacle were the area constraints, spatial layout, high noise constraints.
