Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a transformative force in the field of teacher education, shifting from simple instructional systems in the 1960s to intelligent and adaptive learning tools in the digital era. This article presents a narrative and bibliometric literature review that explores the historical, current, and prospective roles of AI in teacher training. Using sources from reputable databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, SpringerLink, and ResearchGate, the study identifies key thematic transitions—ranging from Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) to ChatGPT and generative AI. The analysis reveals three dominant themes: AI as a co-teacher, AI literacy and ethics, and the urgency of curriculum reform in teacher education. Despite its benefits in enhancing adaptive and personalized learning, AI integration also raises ethical and pedagogical challenges. Therefore, embedding AI literacy, including prompt engineering skills, is imperative to prepare prospective teachers for responsible and effective AI use in education.
