Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aimed to identify the linguistic rules, especially the use of spelling, diction, and sentences in the fantasy narrative texts of class VII students at SMPN 13 Banda Aceh. This qualitative descriptive research was used with a content analysis method. Data were taken from students’ writing, collected through documentation. The data analysis technique used in this research was a qualitative data analysis technique. The results showed that there were spelling errors, such as the use of capital letters (62 errors), writing prepositions (30 errors) and the use of punctuation (15 errors), as well as the use of direct sentences (10 errors) and indirect sentences (145 errors). No diction errors were found, including words with meaning, denotation, connotation, and synonymous words. The results indicate that many students do not understand the use of spelling, such as capital letters, prepositions, and punctuation. Students’ writing skills, especially in writing narrative texts, are still considered poor and require improvement.
